The Beijing Olympics: Are they a trap?

July 31, 2008

Onion panelists debate the very real likelihood that the Chinese government is luring the world to Beijing to spring the mother of all traps on the international community.  Tigers, dragons, and spike-lined pits are in our Olympians future.

Actor Liev Schreiber is younger clone of possible Obama VP Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine

July 29, 2008

**YourDailyChum.com Exclusive**

Is the press so in love with Obama that they’ll ignore this potentially explosive scandal? Tim Kaine obviously conducted some type of illegal cloning experiment. A closer look at both versions.

Democrat Governor of Virginia, Tim Kaine: He’s a politician….elected to blah, blah, blah. Served on blah, blah, blah. Might be a Vice Presidential candidate…..

And the younger and more successful clone:

Actor Liev Schreiber: He’s won a Tony Award, directed one of my favorite films, Everything is Illuminated, is going to star as Sabertooth in the new X-Men/Wolverine film, and is engaged to Naomi Watts.

Obviously, the Schreiber clone has far exceeded the Kaine version. In fact, for Gov. Tim Kaine, allowing Schreiber might be both a political liability, but even worse, a personal insult. Liev Schreiber should consider some serious security before it’s too late.

Michigan “Joker” arrested for stealing Batman memorabilia. Police find nothing in his pockets but knives and lint.

July 28, 2008

Meet 20 yr. old Spencer Taylor of Three Rivers, Michigan. Apparently, young Spencer was so enthralled with the latest Batman film he decided to steal some of the film’s memorabilia from a local movie theater. He was dressed in character as the Joker when he tried to liberate the Batman posters and displays. Based on the mugshot above, you can tell he wasn’t too successful. Police took his mugshot with Spencer still in character with face paint, and they made him wash it off and took it in character as a comic super fan. He was arrested and booked on charges of felony larceny and malicious destruction of property charges.

Former NASA astronaut claims aliens exist and that the U.S. govt has been hiding this info. for decades

July 25, 2008

(If aliens are accepted into society, will they still dress in drag? If so, let’s try to be just as welcoming then, too)

Former NASA astronaut and moon-walker Dr. Edgar Mitchell — a veteran of the Apollo 14 mission — claims aliens exist.

He says extraterrestrials have visited Earth on several occasions — but the alien contact has been repeatedly covered up by governments for six decades.

Mitchell, 77, said during a radio interview in Birmingham, England, that sources at NASA who had had contact with aliens described the beings as “little people who look strange to us.”

He said supposedly real-life ET’s were similar to the traditional image of a “small gray” — short, slight frame, large eyes and large head.

Mitchell also claimed human technology is “not nearly as sophisticated” as the aliens’ and “had they been hostile,” he warned “we would be been gone by now.”

Some aliens we kind of wish would do a better job at hiding.

(The gristle spells out the word “Allah” in Arabic)

Source

Diners have been flocking to a restaurant in northern Nigeria to see pieces of meat which the owner says are inscribed with the name of Allah.

What looks like the Arabic word for God and the name of the prophet Muhammad were discovered in pieces of beef by a diner in Birnin Kebbi.

He was about to eat it, when he suddenly noticed the words in the gristle, the restaurant owner said.

A search of the kitchen’s meat revealed three more pieces which bore the names.

The meat was boiled and then fried before being served, owner Kabiru Haliru told newspaper Weekly Trust.

“When the writings were discovered there were some Islamic scholars who come and eat here and they all commented that it was a sign to show that Islam is the only true religion for mankind,” he said.

The restaurant has kept the pieces of meat for visitors to see.

Thousands of people have already gone to the restaurant to see them since they were discovered last week.

A vet told the newspaper the words “defied scientific explanation”.

“Supposing only one piece of meat was found then it would be suspicious, but given the circumstances there is no explanation,” Dr Yakubu Dominic said.

Batman-Dark Knight deleted scene

July 22, 2008

Funny or Die is hosting an exclusive deleted scene from Batman-Dark Knight.  I can’t imagine why this didn’t make it.  Let’s just hope Christopher Nolan gets to release a director’s cut.

Recording Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”

Recording Nirvana Part 4: Smells Like Teen Spirit. Deconstructed by Butch Vig
July 7th, 2008 by Christian Cummings

The “coupe de grace” that killed crappy metal, this song and the recording of Smells Like Teen Spirit changed the face of music. In part 4, Nevermind producer Butch Vig again solo’s out sections of the multi-track, showcasing the vocals, the solo, and the energy. Truly awesome insight into an infamous song. Also, I dig how Kurt’s voice sounds like he’s been gargling acid by the end of the track.

Even though Pro Tools seems to be up in the mix, I’m glad to see Butch is still working on his SSL.

Nirvana-the recording of “Something in the Way”

July 13, 2008

A big tip of the cap to Christian Cummings who saw that I had posted one of his earlier Nirvana recording blog posts and he let me know some more were up. Be sure to check out his site: MixMyMusic.net. He’s got some great videos of different artists in the studio as well as tips on how to make your own recordings sound much better.

Recording Nirvana Part 3: “Something In The Way”
June 16th, 2008 by Christian Cummings
In part 3 of this series of YouTube videos, Butch Vig again addresses what it was like to record and produce an album for Nirvana. Well worth a watch for Nirvana fans and recording professionals alike, it gives us another deep dose of insight into the world of recording a classic record, and what it was like to be part of their creative process.

I find it interesting how Butch really doesn’t dive into much of a technical conversation about the process, which is something that seems to be common with many great producers. Not that they’re not concerned with it, but they seem to devote more energy into focusing on the soul of the song, and finding a way to make it translate.

As a producer myself, I believe it vastly more important to focus on the song itself, what makes it special, what the artist is hearing in their head and what emotions they wish to convey. It’s only by understanding this vision that I’m able to then correctly apply my technical knowledge.
